As Fall Approaches, Let's Talk Birds and Bears

Spring and summer bring many local and migratory birds to backyard feeders. Then in the fall we start wondering – “Where did the birds go?”

It’s normal for bird activity to dip during fall/winter. Natural food is abundant and calorie requirements are lower. Fill feeders only halfway so they stay fresh. Keeping feeders active helps birds return quickly when seasons change again.

Similar to birds, bear activity is much higher during spring/summer with less movement in the fall/winter. This summer, there were a few bear sightings in Winter Springs/Oviedo. While backyard birders shouldn’t panic, here are a few helpful tips:

  • Keep feeders out of bears’ reach. String them up between two trees or use a heavy duty pole.
  • If they can't be out of reach, bring feeders in from dusk until morning. Bear activity is highest at night and birds are not eating then anyway.
  • Switch to foods that many bears will avoid or that have less scent (i.e. hot pepper seed/suet, safflower, millet, etc.).
  • Use bear-proof feeders. Many of these feeders have warranties that will cover bear damage.

By respecting nature and exercising responsible bird feeding, you can enjoy the birds you love – even if there might be fewer of them this time of year.
